High Temperature in Children

High Temeprature in children, like infant and toddler can be terrifying and exhausting. We experienced this every time we travelled, the weather conditions change, we tried a new playgroup, started nursery.

Our Braun Digital Thermometer was showing 40.6 high temperature when I ran to A&E and came back to a sleepless night. I learned from my son that when the fever starts, you just need to monitor and keep it low until you body has managed to fight the virus or bacteria.

You can purchase this Thermometer here. It is very accurate and due to the red and orange light, it helps you recognize even when you are sleepy if there is an alert for high temperature.

All Family members can use it and it will become the only item you are really worried if you have packed for the holiday or not. It is definetly Mom Approved.

We use Braun ThermoScan 6 Ear thermometer because this was available on the market at the time when we had our baby. Our temperature results matched the hospital when we attended the emergency room. Very easy to use, quick to display the result, it is easy to handle even when the baby is moving, great display for night time reading and accurate. The most recent upgrade of it is Braun ThermoScan 7 Ear Thermometer which I am assuming is a more upgraded version.

Keep a Stock of Paracetamol Syroup ( Calpol Sugar Free, for 2 months and above )

In medical terms, you should refer to it as Paracetamol Syroup, Calpol is a brand. Follow the minimum dose and take your baby to see a doctor the following day if the fever has started at night.

Ibuprofen Syroup ( Calpofren for children over 3 months) is an alternative which you should use only if the Calpol/ Paracetamol does not drop the temperature after 4 hours.

Don’t administer Ibuprofen if your baby has stomach pain, diarrhea.

Traditional ways of dropping the temperature:

I know how difficult it is to see your baby suffering with fever, but you have to refer from hugging them as you will only contribute to their body producing more heat.

I had the experience as a baby to be taking to emergency with very high temperature and I have the memory of being wrapped in cold towels back in the early 90s.

This practice is not outdated. I use cold hand towels (make sure they are drained) on my baby’ feet, hands, arms, upper leg, cheeks, belly if necessary. Avoid the chest area.

Not everyone has access to a fan, but opening the windows and allowing the fresh air is great too. It is important to cool down the temperature in the room.

A baby with fever should be kept in nappy and only if the fever is not too high in a sleeveless top, otherwise remove that too until you see the temperature dropping.

I grew up in Romania where you sock a pair of socks in white distilled vinegar and wear them until the fever drops. I apply the same traditional method to my son and it works.

Keep a small cup with cold water and a towel to use just in case.

If you see your child having running nose, you should consider using Snuffle Bebe Rub. It can be used from 3 months and above and it will allow your baby to open the airways and breath easily.

Since I discovered Calpol Plug, I use it all the time when he is sick. If I find it too strong, especially after you replace the refills, I would keep it on for 4 hours and turn it off if necessary. If your baby’s nose is blocked, you might want to keep it on for the duration of his sleep.

Another great item which I have used since Infant Time and my baby knows it as ‘Pss Pss’ is Calpol Saline Nasal Spray. I usually keep spares in the house, because this spray is great. I tried the Saline Drops, but I found the spray easier to use.

The most vital when your child has fever, is to keep him hydrated. Every time he wakes up, offer him water.

Fever can be scary especially for new parents, but if you keep in the house everything I listed above, you are armed with the only tools that will help your baby get better.

Seeing a doctor is very important and what I mentioned here can guide you in the first hours before you get an appintment.

The same items I recommend here, I bring with me wherever I travel, even if it is for a weekend away.

I hope this information helps and if you want to read more of my posts, follow me on Instagram @momapprovedsocial.
